The Difference Between Your Soul And Your Ego
The Difference Between Your Soul And Your Ego
Learning To Recognize The Voice That Leads You Toward Fear And The Voice That Leads You Toward Growth
By Rachel Madar
Have you ever felt torn between two inner voices?
One voice encourages you to trust.
To grow.
To take a step forward.
To believe in what is possible.
The other voice fills with doubt.
Fear.
Worry.
Judgment.
Worst-case scenarios.
Most women know this experience well.
We feel pulled in different directions.
Part of us wants to expand.
Part of us wants to stay safe.
Part of us longs for change.
Part of us fears it.
And often we wonder:
Which voice should I trust?
Understanding the difference between the voice of the soul and the voice of the ego can transform the way we make decisions, navigate challenges, and create our lives.
Because while both voices are part of the human experience, they are guiding us toward very different destinations.
What Is The Ego?
The word ego is often misunderstood.
Many people assume ego means arrogance.
Self-importance.
Or excessive pride.
But in spiritual growth, the ego is something much broader.
The ego is the part of us that is primarily concerned with survival.
Protection.
Control.
Approval.
Certainty.
Avoiding discomfort.
The ego's job is to keep us safe.
And for that reason, it is constantly scanning for danger.
What if I fail?
What if I get hurt?
What if people judge me?
What if I make the wrong decision?
What if I am not enough?
The ego is not bad.
It is simply limited.
Its focus is often on protecting us from pain rather than helping us grow.
What Is The Soul?
The soul speaks from a different place.
The soul is concerned with growth.
Meaning.
Purpose.
Connection.
Compassion.
Authenticity.
Contribution.
While the ego asks:
How do I stay safe?
The soul asks:
How do I become more fully myself?
While the ego seeks certainty, the soul seeks truth.
While the ego fears change, the soul understands that growth often requires it.
The soul is not reckless.
It simply understands that avoiding discomfort is not the same as living fully.
Why We Often Listen To The Ego First
The ego is loud.
Immediate.
Persistent.
Urgent.
The soul is often quieter.
More subtle.
More patient.
The ego shouts:
Do something now.
Protect yourself.
Avoid risk.
Stay where you are.
The soul whispers:
Trust.
Listen.
Pause.
Reflect.
Take the next aligned step.
Because the ego speaks so loudly, many women mistake it for intuition.
Yet the energy feels different.
And learning to recognize that difference changes everything.
How The Ego Speaks
The ego often speaks through:
Fear.
Comparison.
Scarcity.
Judgment.
Perfectionism.
People-pleasing.
Control.
The need for approval.
The need to be right.
The need to know exactly what will happen.
The ego focuses on limitations.
What could go wrong.
Why something is impossible.
Why you should stay small.
Why now is not the time.
Again, this is not because the ego is your enemy.
It simply wants certainty.
And life rarely offers certainty.
How The Soul Speaks
The soul often speaks through:
Peace.
Curiosity.
Compassion.
Expansion.
Authenticity.
Purpose.
Love.
Trust.
The soul encourages growth.
Not because growth is easy.
Because growth is part of why we are here.
The soul often invites us beyond our comfort zone.
Toward deeper truth.
Toward greater alignment.
Toward becoming who we were meant to be.
A Simple Example
Imagine you are considering a major life change.
Perhaps a career transition.
A new relationship.
A creative project.
A retreat.
A move.
The ego may say:
What if you fail?
What if people judge you?
What if you lose money?
What if it doesn't work?
The soul may say:
What if this helps you grow?
What if this is part of your next chapter?
What if you are stronger than you realize?
Notice the difference.
The ego focuses primarily on fear.
The soul focuses on possibility.
The Ego Loves Control
One of the ego's favorite strategies is control.
The ego wants guarantees.
Proof.
Predictions.
Absolute certainty.
But life does not work that way.
Much of life requires trust.
And this is where the soul becomes essential.
The soul understands that we cannot control every outcome.
But we can choose how we respond.
We can choose who we become.
We can choose how we live.
The Soul And The Ego Both Have A Purpose
Spiritual growth is not about destroying the ego.
Nor is it about pretending fear does not exist.
The goal is awareness.
When we become aware of both voices, we can choose consciously.
We stop reacting automatically.
We begin responding intentionally.
The ego can offer information.
The soul can offer direction.
Together, they can serve us.
But only when the soul leads.
How To Strengthen The Voice Of The Soul
1. Create Moments Of Stillness
The soul is easier to hear in silence than in noise.
Slow down.
Listen.
Create space.
2. Notice What Creates Expansion
Pay attention to how opportunities feel.
Fear often contracts.
Soul guidance often expands.
Even when it feels challenging.
3. Practice Self-Awareness
Observe your thoughts without immediately believing them.
Not every fearful thought is truth.
4. Strengthen Self-Trust
The more you trust yourself, the easier it becomes to follow your deeper knowing.
5. Ask A Different Question
Instead of:
"What is safest?"
Try asking:
"What is most aligned?"
The answers are often very different.
What If The Soul Has Been Guiding You All Along?
Many women spend years searching for guidance.
Yet guidance is often already present.
It appears through intuition.
Longing.
Curiosity.
Restlessness.
Dreams.
Insights.
The soul communicates constantly.
The question is not whether guidance exists.
The question is whether we are listening.
Reflection Questions
Take a journal and explore:
What fears keep repeating in my life?
What would my soul say about those fears?
Where am I choosing safety over growth?
Where am I seeking approval instead of truth?
What feels most aligned right now?
What is my soul inviting me toward?
What am I ready to release?
Write honestly.
Allow yourself to listen beyond the noise.
A Soul-Led Practice
Find a quiet space.
Close your eyes.
Take several slow breaths.
Place your hand over your heart.
Ask yourself:
If fear were not making this decision, what would my soul choose?
Do not rush.
Simply listen.
Notice what arises.
Notice what feels peaceful.
Notice what feels true.
Trust that wisdom.
A Final Thought
Every day, we are presented with choices.
Choices shaped by fear.
Choices shaped by trust.
Choices shaped by habit.
Choices shaped by purpose.
The ego will always have a voice.
And that is part of being human.
But the soul has a voice as well.
A wiser voice.
A deeper voice.
A voice that remembers who you are beneath the conditioning, expectations, and fears.
The journey is not about silencing the ego.
The journey is about learning who should lead.
Because when the soul leads, something extraordinary happens.
We stop living from fear.
We begin living from truth.
We stop seeking approval.
We begin seeking alignment.
We stop asking:
How do I stay safe?
And begin asking:
How do I become who I came here to be?
And that question has the power to change everything.
