Finding Meaning During Times Of Change
How To Discover Purpose In The Midst Of Uncertainty
By Rachel Madar
Change has a way of disrupting our lives.
A relationship ends.
A career shifts.
Children leave home.
A diagnosis arrives.
A loved one passes away.
A dream dissolves.
A chapter closes.
And suddenly the life we knew no longer exists in the same way.
During these moments, one question often rises above all others:
Why is this happening?
We search for explanations.
We search for certainty.
We search for answers.
And perhaps most of all, we search for meaning.
Because while we can endure many things, suffering feels far more difficult when it seems meaningless.
Yet one of the greatest truths I have learned is this:
Meaning is not always found immediately.
Sometimes meaning is revealed gradually.
Over time.
Through reflection.
Through growth.
Through the wisdom we gain while walking through the experience itself.
The Human Need For Meaning
As human beings, we naturally seek meaning.
We want our experiences to make sense.
We want to believe there is value in what we are going through.
Especially during difficult seasons.
When life changes unexpectedly, we often feel disoriented.
The future becomes unclear.
The familiar disappears.
The identity we once relied upon begins to shift.
In those moments, finding meaning can become an anchor.
Not because it removes the pain.
But because it helps us understand that the pain is not the whole story.
When The Old Story No Longer Works
Many women spend years living according to a particular story.
A story about who they are.
A story about what their life will look like.
A story about how things are supposed to unfold.
Then life changes.
And suddenly that story no longer fits.
The marriage ends.
The children leave home.
The career changes.
The priorities shift.
And we find ourselves asking:
Who am I now?
What does this mean?
What comes next?
This is often where transformation begins.
Not when we find new answers.
But when we become willing to ask new questions.
Meaning Is Often Found In Hindsight
One of the most challenging realities about growth is that we rarely understand it while it is happening.
We want immediate understanding.
Immediate clarity.
Immediate reassurance.
Yet life often unfolds differently.
The lesson becomes visible later.
The purpose becomes clear later.
The gift becomes apparent later.
Many women can look back on difficult chapters and say:
"I would never choose that experience again."
And in the same breath:
"It changed me in ways I could never have imagined."
The meaning was not visible in the moment.
It emerged through time.
Four Places Meaning Often Hides
1. Meaning Hides In What We Learn
Every experience teaches us something.
About ourselves.
About life.
About resilience.
About relationships.
About what truly matters.
The question is not:
"Why is this happening?"
The question becomes:
"What is this teaching me?"
2. Meaning Hides In Who We Become
Sometimes the greatest gift of an experience is not what happens.
It is who we become because of it.
More compassionate.
More courageous.
More resilient.
More authentic.
More aligned.
More self-aware.
The experience shapes us.
And often that growth becomes part of the meaning.
3. Meaning Hides In What We Release
Change often requires letting go.
Old identities.
Old expectations.
Old beliefs.
Old roles.
Old stories.
While this process can be painful, it creates space for something new to emerge.
Sometimes the meaning is found in what we no longer need to carry.
4. Meaning Hides In What We Create
Many women discover new purpose after major life transitions.
A new career.
A new passion.
A new relationship.
A new calling.
A new way of living.
A deeper connection to themselves.
The transition itself may not have been the gift.
But what it made possible becomes part of the meaning.
What If Meaning Is Not Something You Find?
What if meaning is something you create?
This question changed my life.
Because it shifted my focus away from searching for explanations and toward creating purpose.
Instead of asking:
"Why did this happen?"
I began asking:
"How do I want to respond?"
"Who do I want to become?"
"What can I create from this experience?"
These questions return power to us.
They remind us that while we cannot always control what happens, we can influence how we grow through it.
The Spiritual Perspective
Many spiritual traditions teach that life unfolds in seasons.
Seasons of growth.
Seasons of challenge.
Seasons of rest.
Seasons of transformation.
When viewed through this lens, change is not an interruption.
It is part of the journey.
Part of the unfolding.
Part of our evolution.
This perspective does not eliminate pain.
But it helps us trust that even difficult chapters may contain wisdom we cannot yet see.
The Questions That Matter Most
During times of change, it can be helpful to shift from asking:
Why is this happening to me?
Toward:
What is this asking of me?
What am I learning?
What am I being invited to release?
What am I being invited to become?
What wants to emerge through this experience?
These questions often reveal possibilities hidden beneath the pain.
Reflection Questions
Take a journal and explore:
What change am I currently navigating?
What has this experience taught me about myself?
What strengths have emerged through this chapter?
What beliefs or identities am I being invited to release?
What new possibilities are beginning to appear?
How might I create meaning from this experience?
Allow your answers to emerge naturally.
There is no right answer.
Only honest reflection.
A Meaning-Making Practice
Find a quiet space.
Take several slow breaths.
Place your hand over your heart.
Ask yourself:
"What is life inviting me to understand through this experience?"
Then sit quietly.
Listen.
Write whatever arises.
Do not worry about being right.
Simply remain open.
Meaning often arrives softly.
Like a whisper.
Like a realization.
Like a light gradually appearing in the darkness.
A Final Thought
Not every experience comes with an explanation.
Not every chapter immediately reveals its purpose.
Yet time and again, I have witnessed women discover meaning in places they never expected.
In heartbreak.
In loss.
In uncertainty.
In endings.
In new beginnings.
The meaning may not be visible today.
And that is okay.
You do not need to understand everything right now.
You simply need the willingness to remain open.
Because often, the chapters that challenge us most deeply become the chapters that shape us most profoundly.
And someday, you may look back and realize:
The meaning was not hidden.
It was unfolding all along.
