The Difference Between Moving On And Moving Forward

Why Healing Does Not Require You To Forget What Mattered

By Rachel Madar

One of the phrases I hear most often after loss, divorce, heartbreak, or major life transitions is:

"You need to move on."

Usually, it is offered with good intentions.

Friends say it.

Family members say it.

Sometimes we even say it to ourselves.

Yet many women struggle with those words.

Because something about them does not feel right.

How do you move on from a marriage that shaped decades of your life?

How do you move on from someone you deeply loved?

How do you move on from the dream you carried for years?

How do you move on from the chapter that helped make you who you are?

The truth is, perhaps you do not.

Perhaps healing is not about moving on.

Perhaps healing is about moving forward.

And there is a profound difference between the two.

The Pressure To "Get Over It"

We live in a culture that often values productivity over processing.

Speed over reflection.

Recovery over healing.

As a result, many women feel pressure to "be over it."

To stop talking about it.

To stop feeling it.

To stop grieving it.

To move on.

Yet the heart rarely follows society's timeline.

The heart remembers.

The heart honors.

The heart carries meaning.

And when something has deeply touched our lives, it is natural that part of us remains connected to the experience.

Healing does not require pretending it never mattered.

Why "Moving On" Can Feel Wrong

For many women, moving on feels like abandonment.

Abandoning the relationship.

Abandoning the memories.

Abandoning the love.

Abandoning the significance of what was experienced.

And because of this, they unconsciously resist healing.

Not because they want to remain in pain.

Because they do not want to betray what mattered.

This is where a new understanding becomes important.

Healing does not ask us to erase.

Healing asks us to integrate.

Moving Forward Is Different

Moving forward does not mean forgetting.

Moving forward does not mean denying.

Moving forward does not mean pretending the loss never happened.

Moving forward means carrying the experience differently.

The relationship becomes part of your story.

Not your entire story.

The loss becomes part of your journey.

Not your identity.

The heartbreak becomes part of your wisdom.

Not your future.

When we move forward, we allow life to continue while honoring what has been.

The Love Remains

One of the greatest fears people have after loss is that healing will somehow diminish the love.

But healing does not remove love.

Love often remains.

What changes is the suffering attached to it.

The attachment softens.

The resistance softens.

The longing softens.

And eventually, gratitude begins to coexist with grief.

The memory remains.

The meaning remains.

The love remains.

But life begins moving again.

The Weight We Were Never Meant To Carry

Many women unknowingly carry emotional burdens long after a chapter has ended.

Regret.

Guilt.

Resentment.

Blame.

Unanswered questions.

They believe carrying these burdens keeps them connected to the past.

Yet often, these burdens prevent them from fully living in the present.

Moving forward invites us to release what no longer serves us while preserving what still has value.

The lesson.

The wisdom.

The love.

The growth.

These are worth carrying.

The suffering is not.

What Moving Forward Looks Like

Moving forward may look like:

Remembering without breaking.

Loving without longing.

Reflecting without reliving.

Learning without dwelling.

Honoring without clinging.

It may look like smiling at a memory that once brought tears.

It may look like creating a future without feeling guilty about it.

It may look like embracing joy again.

Not because the past no longer matters.

But because life continues calling you forward.

Why Some Women Stay Stuck

Many women believe moving forward means they are leaving someone or something behind.

In reality, what keeps them stuck is often fear.

Fear of forgetting.

Fear of changing.

Fear of letting go.

Fear of becoming someone new.

Yet growth does not erase the past.

Growth honors it.

And then builds upon it.

Every chapter contributes to who we become.

Nothing meaningful is lost.

The Wisdom Hidden Within Loss

Every significant experience leaves something behind.

Wisdom.

Perspective.

Strength.

Compassion.

Awareness.

Resilience.

The goal is not to carry the wound forever.

The goal is to carry the wisdom.

When we focus on the wisdom, the experience becomes part of our evolution rather than a place where we remain trapped.

What If Moving Forward Is An Act Of Love?

Many women fear that moving forward means leaving someone behind.

But what if moving forward is actually a way of honoring them?

Honoring what was shared.

Honoring what was learned.

Honoring the impact they had on your life.

And then choosing to live fully because of those lessons.

Not despite them.

Perhaps the greatest tribute to what mattered is not remaining stuck in the past.

Perhaps it is allowing the experience to help you become more fully alive.

Reflection Questions

Take a journal and explore:

What am I afraid will happen if I move forward?

What am I still carrying that no longer serves me?

What wisdom have I gained from this experience?

What parts of the past deserve to be honored?

What parts am I ready to release?

What would moving forward look like for me?

What future is asking to be created?

Write honestly.

Allow your heart to respond.

A Moving Forward Practice

Place one hand on your heart.

Take several slow breaths.

Bring to mind the person, experience, or chapter you are grieving.

Then say:

I honor what was.

I honor what I learned.

I honor what mattered.

And I give myself permission to continue living.

I carry the love.

I carry the wisdom.

I release the suffering.

I move forward with grace.

Allow these words to settle.

Return to them whenever you need them.

A Final Thought

You do not need to move on from what mattered.

You do not need to forget.

You do not need to erase your history.

You do not need to pretend you were never changed.

You were changed.

You were touched.

You were shaped.

You were transformed.

And that is part of being human.

Healing is not about abandoning the past.

Healing is about allowing the past to take its rightful place.

A chapter.

A teacher.

A memory.

A source of wisdom.

But not the entire story.

Because your story continues.

There are still experiences waiting for you.

Still relationships waiting for you.

Still joy waiting for you.

Still purpose waiting for you.

Still life waiting for you.

And moving forward is not a betrayal of what has been.

It is an affirmation that your heart is still willing to live.

Still willing to love.

Still willing to grow.

Still willing to become.

And that is one of the most courageous things a person can do.
